Katharina Konradi, known for her success in opera and operetta, prefers art songs. She will perform a rare duet concert in Cologne with mezzo-soprano Catriona Morison and pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz. Their program focuses on romantic and late-romantic duets—hidden gems rarely heard in concert halls.
Mignon, Ophelia, and Mary, Queen of Scots—these three towering figures of literature and history provide the inspiration for an evening of words and music created by Christiane Karg, Malcolm Martineau, and actor Helmut Mooshammer. In addition to Goethe settings by Beethoven, Schubert, Wolf, Duparc, and Josephine Lange and Ophelia songs by Brahms, Strauss, Chausson, and Wolfgang Rihm, the program also includes Robert Schumann’s Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart, the composer’s final vocal cycle written in 1852.
In the hopes that in April spring will already be bursting out of the ground, the sky, and people’s hearts, this concert could not begin more fittingly than with Lili Boulanger’s D’un matin de printemps, a sonic representation of springtime. It is an entertaining and wonderfully orchestrated piece that is definitely worth listening to. Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto is a more familiar work, and has found one of its most sympathetic advocates in Vadim Gluzman; indeed, this work has become second nature to him. Additionally, Gluzman has had a long-standing collaboration with conductor Tugan Sokhiev (as well as with BRSO concertmaster Anton Barakhovsky). Chausson’s Symphony in B flat major, a pinnacle of French symphonic music, will round off the programme.
